War Art

Welcome to this important time in Gordon’s life, when he worked as a designated war artist. Between 1997 and 2012 his canvases bore witness to some of the most turbulent regions. By then in his fifties, he accompanied military units through the Balkans, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Armed with a sketchbook and camera he documented the harsh realities of war.

His art vividly portrays the devastation of war and shines a light on the often overlooked aspect, namely, the shattered lives of innocent civilians. His brush strokes capture the stories of those caught in the crossfire. Collaborating with mostly the Special Forces and Royal Marines, he gained a unique authenticity to his art, bringing into focus the unvarnished truths of military life and with it the complexities of war.

These paintings invite you to explore powerful images, offering a reflective journey through the landscapes and legacies of war as seen through his eyes. Today, this impactful and important work, is honoured in major military museums across the United Kingdom, serving testament to the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit.
